Heroku vs self-hosted PaaS
CapRover is in many ways similar to Dokku. It uses Docker for deployment just like Dokku but CapRover does not support buildpack deployments as it uses Dockerfiles only. This is not necessarily a bad thing since Dockerfile deployments are great in Dokku as well. You don’t have to write your own dockerfiles however for simple deployments as there are multiple defaults for...

  • My Fediverse use – I'm hosting everything myself – PeerTube, Mastodon and Lemmy
I am using https://masto.host/ for Mastodon and https://elest.io/ for Lemmy. They are fully managed. I'm not worried about who owns my data, but I do want to have a stable identity. The first Mastodon server I signed up with mysteriously disappeared after a couple of weeks, so I decided I was better off paying a small monthly fee to put it on my own domain. - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • My Fediverse use – I'm hosting everything myself – PeerTube, Mastodon and Lemmy
Maybe not exactely what you're looking for (not open source and not non profit) but there is some solutions out there like this one: https://elest.io/. - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • I don't want to host services (but I do)
I have created Elestio (https://elest.io) to address this pain, we take care of all aspects (infra, deployments, security, dns, smtp, backups, monitoring, alerts, updates, migrations ...) and we do it for a catalog of 233 open source software and also for CI/CD pipelines to deploy your own code from a Github/Gitlab repo. - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago
  • Inviting you to try ElfHosted 🧝 (self-hosting-as-a-service), $10 free credit, apps from $0.05/day

  • Brand new to Lemmy: can I rent a server to set up an instance?
If you want something more fully managed, I don't think anybody offers fully managed lemmy instances just yet but you might be able to find a company that already does other apps who is willing to add lemmy to their repertoire. elest.io already offers fully managed mastodon, peertube, and owncast instances so it seems like it might be up their alley if you're looking for that. The modern iteration of these tools has taken the developer experience learnings from the Platform as a Service (PaaS) category, and will bring them to your own VM, giving you your own personal PaaS. • Building a privacy-friendly, self-hosted application architecture with SvelteKit
For hosting all of the services I am using CapRover. It's a wonderfully simple PaaS (platform-as-a-service) that gives you a Heroku-like interface but runs entirely on a Virtual Private Server you control. For automated deploys, GitHub Actions are used. I've recorded a tutorial on how to get started with and deploy SvelteKit onto this architecture, so do check it out if this sounds interesting to you by clicking... - Source: dev.to / 11 months ago
