If you want something very lightweight, you can check out EDE. It's a super light desktop environment that only uses a few MBs of RAM (tested on an old netbook, and runs very smoothly) that looks a bit like Windows 95, it's a bit of a pain to install on Debian since the support is experimental but it does work.
