However, there has been some research and experimentation with it, namely Citybound can (and does) distribute the simulation work across different players playing in the same instance, but this is "only" a Bachelor (or Master or PhD, whatever) thesis, not really a fully playable game. I don't know about Lunatic, but there's a bunch of Rust actor frameworks that run on many machines.
