You can use a program called Directory Monitor to pinpoint exactly where changes are being made on your computer. I use whenever I need to locate a save file for any game. On Mac there is (was?) Hazel, the closest thing on Linux is tfeldmann/organize: The file management automation tool., it uses Python. An alternative would be benjaminoakes/maid: Be lazy. Let Maid clean up after you, based on rules you define. Think of it as "Hazel for hackers"., but it uses Ruby, which I don't know. Source: over 2 years ago
