I don't know what to say. The act of making a choice is just to "select from two or more possibilities," as dictionary.com puts it. We do that. Cats and dogs and birds do that. My wife set up a bunch of her mature vines hanging down from our entrance staircase (both sides). On the left is about a five year old String of Hearts, then Monstera (only a couple of years old), then Pothos (about five years old). Thank you! I actually had a hard time finding prior work on this, so I appreciate the references. The dictionary is based on https://wordnet.princeton.edu/, no word2vec. It's just plain lookup among precomputed embeddings (with mxbai-embed-large). And yes, I'm excluding words that are present in the query because. TL;DR: The authors pretrain the model to classify images into Wordnet synsets[a] that appear in the caption, using a standard Cross Entropy loss. They keep the number of classes relatively small by removing any synsets that don't show up in captions at least 500 times in the dataset. It seems to work well.
