Questions and Answers

As answered by people managing Dictionary.com and Alexa Translations.

What's the story behind your product?

Alexa Translations's answer:

In 2002, Gary Kalaci founded Alexa Translations to address the need for a new, premium-quality translation service. Before starting his own business, Gary worked in the legal and professional services industry, where translation was a regular need, but quality work was hard to come by: missed deadlines, impersonal service, and, most importantly, inconsistent quality. His experience highlighted a gap in the translation industry, and at that point, he knew leaders in business would benefit from Alexa Translations’ new approach: client-dedicated project management combined with sector-specific translation expertise.

How would you describe your primary audience?

Alexa Translations's answer:

Major law firms, banks and financial institutions, and government-owned companies across Canada and the US

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Alexa Translations's answer:

Alexa Translations does not just provide one of industry's most accurate translation solutions but a leading project management platform and industry-specific subject matter experts who work towards improving the quality of translations delivered by the platform. The platform is tailored specifically toward the legal, financial and government industries but is also extremely useful within translation teams in large organizations. All this, backed by robust customer support that provides seamless onboarding, training and ongoing support 24/7.

What makes your product unique?

Alexa Translations's answer:

We aren't just your average translation platform. We provide turnkey translation solutions that include unmatched legal translation accuracy by certified legal and financial linguists, a project management team that extends your in-house team, and a customer service suite to support you at all times. Our translation accuracy is comparable and, in some cases, better than what DeepL, Google and other major platforms can provide you.

  • What's Going on with 'Nonplussed'?
American Heritage is much better. They respond to usage, but much more conservatively. And their entries will actually have brief explanations from their "usage panel" about ambiguous or changing meanings. https://dictionary.com. - Source: Hacker News / 22 days ago
  • Sam Harris #1 quote about Free Will
I don't know what to say. The act of making a choice is just to "select from two or more possibilities," as dictionary.com puts it. We do that. Cats and dogs and birds do that. Single cell amoebas do that. Trees can even be said to do that. And certainly computers do that. Even the problem Sam Harris is stating above is in the form of an if-then statement, the fundamental conditional statement upon which... Source: 6 months ago

  • Hanging vines
My wife set up a bunch of her mature vines hanging down from our entrance staircase (both sides). On the left is about a five year old String of Hearts, then Monstera (only a couple of years old), then Pothos (about five years old). The String of Hearts is about 10 feet long, but seems to still get nutrients and moisture to the end. The pothoses (strangely, that is what dictionary.com says is the plural of... • what's the meaning of imminent
This word is very interesting. I came across it in a comic. Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary's definition seems like a synonym of immediate, but dictionary.com's definition seems more suitable for the comic. Source: 8 months ago
