Your other option, which I actually use in my R56, is to utilize the Crankshaft project with a Raspberry Pi and a generic 7" touchscreen from Amazon. I mounted mine with a magnetic mount from the CD drive and power it through the aux power port. Mine works both with wired and wireless Android auto, with very few glitches. Maybe try Bitsbox? It teaches Javascript by making games. They can share the games with their friends, and it also leaves a lot of room for them to modify the games using what they learned. It teaches a lot of programming skills that are useful later. There is also Google's CS First, that's free and has a lot of different projects.
