For non photographic images, I use a combination of ImageAlpha and ImageOptim and sometimes crop the image to 2x of the maximum expected display size (2x so that the image will stay sharp on high-DPI screen). Keep in mind that my method uses the lossy compression approach. Meaning that you wouldn't want to use my method on your master images. Source: almost 3 years ago
