I do. You can use ClamWin if you want an AV local to the machine. I typically keep the retro computers on their own network that can't communicate with my home one. Just use common sense. The other - perhaps more important - reason to provide a laptop is data risk management. If the laptop is yours, you can force encryption, backups, and install endpoint security tools, which allow you to remotely wipe it if lost/stolen/fired.
