I use Cathy (http://rva.mtg.sk/) to catalog partitioned 2T drives and have done for years. About a year ago I started getting errors, likely because I moved to single partition 4T drives or lost out after a Windows 10 upgrade. Kobos[1] and Pocketbooks[2] are a lot more open than Kindles. AFAIK you can transfer .epub files into both devices and these epubs are perfectly readable via the stock OS.
