I have two layers of filtering. Layer 1 is the "Subscription" layer like you mention. I also have a Layer 2 which is not all episodes of a Podcast are meaningful for me. Therefore, I don't listen to ALL episodes. A Podcast app like Castro is extremely beneficial in making an active decision to add a podcast to my queue [0]. The other actively developed FOSS client for podcasts is PodVerse. I have only briefly used it, but it also seemed polished and had fully offline modes available like you need. PodVerse seems to be going for an iOS look while AntennaPod uses material design 3, so I went with the latter for the sake of consistency.
