I tried doing this but every time my computer wouldn't bought properly so I cntrl alt f5ed and cleared the config just so I could boot properly. I double checked it and had another person check it. I also tried sudo apt install xautomation x11-utils and no detection on the side mouse buttons same with sudo apt install libdaemon-dev libglade2-dev libgtk2.0-dev build-essential && git clone --depth=1... I have been using Karabiner elements (https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org), they allow keyboard customization, I have switched the colon and semicolon key, by default without pressing shift, the key will output colon (:) , I find this useful as I type lot of colon daily.
