On the internet side, you should look up Electron and CEF (chromium embedded framework). W3C, WHATWG, Khronos Group. It's a giant step backwards in site design. Discuit wastes an incredible amount of screen space in making the site look pretty. Scroll down a bit and you'll see that more than half of your screen is empty and there is very little submissions displayed. Look at https://old.reddit.com/ and see the difference between the two.
