Maybe try Bitsbox? It teaches Javascript by making games. They can share the games with their friends, and it also leaves a lot of room for them to modify the games using what they learned. It teaches a lot of programming skills that are useful later. There is also Google's CS First, that's free and has a lot of different projects. Practice is everything. The more you draw sketches more progress you get. When I graduated from the art academy, we went to a museum and copy famous artists to understand their lines, shapes, and composition. Later you will understand how to progress and build your style.
