  Checksums are better long term. However a nice GUI program: Beyond Compare from Scooter Software is a native Windows app that will compare entire subdirectories or even entire disks and will show a GUI of changes / mods / missing / extra files. I know exactly what you mean: de-scrambling sentences and lists because of those damn columns sucks, but being blind, and with relatively few pdf, text, doc, etc, or interactive cyoas, it's complicated.   The best OCR I have come across on the internet is the one on onlineocr.net however its page limit makes its paid version not worth buying.
