For cool places Atlas Obscura atlasobscura.com is highly recommended. Also https://www.roadsideamerica.com/ though I usually default to Obscura. Outside of that I travel by my stomach so I try to try the local food of every place I visit so maybe picking a theme so your boys could find things related to it would be a fun pretrip/trip activity. France from London is easy by Eurostar; best to go to their own website eurostar.com/ Paris is a simple journey from London St Pancras International. The rest of France is also efficently served by train but obviously the distance from Paris adds to journey time.
