For cool places Atlas Obscura atlasobscura.com is highly recommended. Also https://www.roadsideamerica.com/ though I usually default to Obscura. Outside of that I travel by my stomach so I try to try the local food of every place I visit so maybe picking a theme so your boys could find things related to it would be a fun pretrip/trip activity. I see the train station is just in the airport, cool, but why is it impossible to buy tickets for most trains? I tried multiple times since my order (months ago) using bahn.de, thetrainline.com, omio.com and it's still unable to provide the simplest train tickets we want :'(. Source: 9 months ago

I recommend omio.com and checking train prices in cp.pt and flixbus and https://rede-expressos.pt/en/ for bus prices. Within Lisbon you will have to see what works better depending on where the bus or train takes you. Source: about 1 year ago
