  • Encrypted external storage
You can always use an encrypted USB drive. I've used these a lot: https://apricorn.com/. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Alternatives to persistent storage
Yes, the stick I’m going to get requires no software to decrypt it’s all done on the hardware. Here it is. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Software that can encrypt external drive and wipe all data at the same time?
You will want a hardware encrypted external drive such as this: Https://apricorn.com/aegis-padlock-ssd-usb-30-solid-state-drive-faq. Source: over 2 years ago
  • What model to buy as my backup?
It depends on what applets you rely on. If they're GPG/PIV/HMAC-SHA1, then one of these https://apricorn.com/ with software encryption on top of them, only accessed on an air-gapped machine is as flexible as it gets (more tricky, but equally flexible (and much more expensive) is the YubiHSM). Source: almost 3 years ago
  • recovering private key info from a recovered file
One of these: https://apricorn.com/ plus LUKS encryption on top of it is pretty damn great if you only interact directly with it on air-gapped machines. Source: almost 3 years ago

  • Installing windows and it says that driver is missing, not drives
You could, for example, boot your computer to an operating system which resides on a USB stick, and then examine the health of your existing drive.... Booting to something like Parted Magic, since it has most of the tools you'd need for "fixing" hard drives, already included with the OS. All that would take, is a USB stick, and a computer to download and mount the image on the stick (with a program like YUMI). Source: 11 months ago
  • Need help putting unallocated space to windows partition, any help would be appreciated
But, ranting aside, you can use either * GParted Live, or * PartedMagic To boot into a linux OS and modify the drive's partitions. Specifically you'll want to move the “D:” disk partition to make the unallocated space next to the disk partition you want to extend. Source: 11 months ago
  • Completely Wipe an Old Hard Drive: DBAN Alternatives?
Purchase a copy of Parted Magic. https://partedmagic.com/. I buy one every few years. Supports the maintainer. Great set of tools. Source: 12 months ago
  • Completely Wipe an Old Hard Drive: DBAN Alternatives?
Purchase a copy of parted magic. Great utility Linux distro. I buy a new version every few years. https://partedmagic.com/. Source: 12 months ago
  • I want to destroy a hdd(question). I threw it from a balcony 3m tall. Dunked it in water for like 10 days. Can I throw that thing in the trash knowing in the absurd chance someone picks it up, can't recover something?
For future reference, running something like Active KillDisk or Parted Magic against the drive multiple passes should be more than sufficient to prevent most all recovery unless you're dealing with a government entity. Source: about 1 year ago
