Your back-of-napkin calculations must assume values for the price of gas and the price of electricity. If, like in CA, gas is $5.46/gallon (ref. https://gasprices.aaa.com/) and electricity is $0.19/kWh (ref. https://www.electricchoice.com/electricity-prices-by-state/) then the equation looks very different from if gas is $4.74/gallon and electricity is $0.33/kWh like HI. - Source: Hacker News / 12 days ago
3.18 according to AAA down about 14 cents from last year, but with the current price of oil per barrel dropping significantly, expect that number to fall further. Source: 5 months ago

Gasoline Prices: As of early December 2023, the national average gas price in the USA is approximately $3.25 per gallon. This figure comes from two sources: $3.27 per gallon according to Finder [❞] and $3.247 per gallon according to AAA Gas Prices [❞]. Source: 5 months ago
> I see news of gas prices dropping and prices have only gone up over the last months in CA. California average per gallon prices for regular, mid-grade, and premium gasoline, as well as diesel, are all down over the day, week, month, and year. https://gasprices.aaa.com/?state=CA. - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
I'd also recommend experimentation with new methods per each tank of gas and use fuelly.com to track and add notes to see which methods work the best for your specific Prius and use case over time. Source: 11 months ago
Sure there is. Go check out fuelly.com and tell me that you wouldn't be able to estimate pretty closely the mpg of any car you own based on that data and considering your own driving style. Source: 11 months ago
As to the data the article is using... It mentioned fuelly.com as a source. Just clicking on a few PHEVs from that website, it's abundantly clear how tiny the data set is. Nor does it seem to do much in the way of data verification. I just pulled up the listing for the Chevy Volt. Somehow I doubt there are dozens of people between 200 mpge and 500 mpge (200 mpge = 6 mi/kWh), and even 2 cars are listed at 1 mpge! Source: 12 months ago
Fuelly.com has real-life experience for each. Source: about 1 year ago
Nice! I have a 2015 corolla LE and my best tank was 50.8 MPG on 412 miles. It was a trip from KY to OH cruising around 65 mph mostly. I average 42.8 MPG across 140,264 miles tracked via fuelly.com. If I didnt live in cold Michigan winters it would be higher. Very fuel-efficent gas-only car, definitely capable of 50+ MPG with the right conditions and certain manner of driving.
