Why isn’t there a way to connect notion to a custom domain for free / cheaply?

I’ve looked at different notion site builders like super.so but you have to pay $16/mo to connect a domain, and that’s too much for me since I’m still just starting out.

It’s frustrating that even on notion paid plans, the best you can do is a notion.site subdomain like mywebsite.notion.site. Why can’t I just connect to mywebsite.com?
