For those who write fanfiction, why would you write a novel-length manuscript just to publish it for free?

I'm thinking of how hard it is to write a full novel manuscript (70-100k words!) and I wonder why anyone would wish to do this completely for free (and sometimes under a random username). It took me 6 months of continued effort to finish my first draft (and yet there are some seriously incredible works published on sites like AO3 and fanfiction.net.
