TryHackMe Hack The Box
  1. TryHackMe is an online platform for learning and teaching cyber security, all through your browser.
Definitely. There’s (Try Hack Me)[http://tryhackme.com] and (Hack The Box)[http://hackthebox.com], which are both excellent interactive learning platforms. I’m less personally familiar with Hack The Box, but at least for Try Hack Me, there are free modules and there are also modules locked behind a subscription service (it was $90/year when I signed up last year). I found it very helpful when I was prepping for my eJPT as a supplement to the official content I was studying. I think if you structured your time diligently, paid $90 for access to all of the Try Hack Me content (which means you could go through their learning paths, which is what I used as opposed to piecemeal modules), and got some basic certifications, you could avoid the boot camp. I would go for the CompTIA Security+, AWS CCP, and the AZ900. That’s going to get your feet wet in both major cloud providers as well as the foundational principles of IT security (and Sec+ is a DOD-recognized cert). I should say this is assuming you have absolutely no experience. If you already have some experience, you may need to adjust some of those goals accordingly. That’s also assuming that you want to go into cyber security, because that’s what boot camp I attended. If you’re hoping to go into DevOps, networking, or one of the other thousand specialties other than security, you may want a totally different approach and different learning materials. Assuming you want to get into security, I’d also encourage you to get some foundational experience outside of security before trying to pivot/specialize. I worked a service desk and as a desktop engineer before moving into security, and while that wasn’t my intention, I learned invaluable skills as well as getting to touch a lot of different services, products, infrastructures, etc., and I really feel that experience gave me a further leg up when I moved to security.
