My Apple gift cards were disabled and made unusable, what can I do?

I purchased several Apple gift cards from target.com because they were offering them at discounted price. I tried placing product orders with these gift cards several times on apple.com and all of them were cancelled 2-4 days after placing the order. I even tried it in the Apple store but the gift cards did not work.
