mergerfs

If you plan to use linux take a look at mergerfs. It lets you use drives of various sizes combined into a single volume with the benefit that no file spans multiple drives. If you want to add redundancy you can add snapraid. Additionally, the path for adding additional storage space (when you want it later) is significantly easier compared to RAID or ZFS.
