Does it make sense to try to install / maintain a gentoo system in a vm for learning more about Linux?

Gentoo could provide a different perspective on how a Linux system can work compared to Arch, but if you’re going for different, then something like NixOS, Clear Linux, Fedora Silverblue, Ubuntu Core, or the aforementioned Buildroot is arguably going to be better because they provide more strongly differentiated perspectives compared to Arch.

  3. Artix Linux, a systemd-free linux distribution.
Gentoo could provide an easy way to learn about init systems other than systemd. But in practice, coming from Arch, Artix is probably a better choice for most of the alternatives except for OpenRC (Gentoo or Alpine is better for that) and the traditional LSB init.d setup (where Devuan is really the only practical option anymore). I’m specifically mentioning Artix here because it is Arch, just with proper support for things other than systemd as the init system (if you were a Debian user primarily, Devuan would be my primary recommendation instead).
