French language books available on Kindle?

Initially Amazon.com was considered a U.S. Point of sale, so copyright restrictions prevented availability of ebooks. You could order hard cover because the POS for those was France. Somehow or other, the major publishing houses worked deals to allow original French language books to be sold on Amazon, either by lifting territorial restrictions or treating amazon.com as a French POS when the book is sold directly to amazon by the French publisher.

I personally either find ePub at librairies or send PDF to read. If you want to take it to the next step, you can convert other formats into Kindle format with Calibre the e-book manager. For example, I managed to find on the web an old PDF of Bilbo le Hobbit in French, convert it into a Kindle e-book and emailed it to my reader. I'm currently reading it and it worked fine.
