Journaling can help. Some people write it out and then shred it, bury it, burn it so no one else can read it. There are lots of self-help groups, coda.org and Al-anon, but sometimes it can take some trial and error before you find the right group. Melody Beattie has written several good books. Healing the Shame that binds you by John Bradshaw is another good one. And counseling can be helpful; it's nice to have someone in your corner, who can offer you support and guidance.
