One of the best things that helped me was figuring out which path & domain I want to be in (blue team, red team, GRC (Governance, Risk, & Compliance), etc.) otherwise it’s extremely easy to go down some really deep rabbit holes & lose focus & track of what you want to do. Some great beginner friendly things he can do for free/cheap are things like completing rooms on TryHackMe & let’s defend. There’s several learning paths in each & they’ll give him the added benefit of some hands on work as well.
