The remote files are no longer available beyond 2015, but Command—Option—Shift R worked for me. Good news is there's a DMG link that apple provides on support.apple.com that should help. Google El Capitan DMG you can try restoring the image to the drive so when it boots up it will run the installer. Make a backup, as you may have to clear the drive for this to work. You can set the clock back, which I did, but it still didn't work. For security purposes I would update to High Sierra, download the DMG and install on a portioned drive there are some exploits that could cause you data loss without the necessary patches from Apple.
