Lessons vs self-taught is up to you. For what it's worth I was able to reach intermediate proficiency self-taught in about a year practicing every day for 30 minutes. My main resources were justinguitar.com and Yousician. If you're the type that benefits from more guidance (I think you are considering you're asking here :) then lessons can provide that structure and motivation.
