My datahoarding method (is it smart?)

FreeFileSync checksum
  1. FreeFileSync is a free open source data backup software that helps you synchronize files and folders on Windows, Linux and macOS.
Https://freefilesync.org/ is a handy tool to keep both drives in sync. It can also give you a preview of the changes to be made before executing the sync so you may verify things look correct. It sucks to accidentally delete an original file & sync that deletion to your backup copy.

  2. checksum is a no-nonsense BLAKE2/SHA1/MD5 hashing tool for Windows.

The next thing you want to look into is file integrity. Files can get corrupted & if you update your backup with a corrupted version of the file the backup isn't much help. If you're hoping to retain data for an extended period of time look into file hashing. I use https://corz.org/windows/software/checksum/ but there likely better options out there, I haven't looked recently. I like that the corz checksum software can be run with different options from the command line I can store all hashes in one external text file.
