    Easy: Doing backups should be a frictionless process, otherwise you are tempted to skip it.

    Personally, I would just keep an encrypted copy of the channel data locally on the node, and incorporate that into my existing backup strategy, which backs up data to another computer on my home network using Restic, and then syncs that Restic repository (whose data is encrypted) to a cloud storage provider to act as an offsite backup.

    GnuPG is a complete and free implementation of the OpenPGP standard as defined by RFC4880 (also known as PGP).

    The security comes from having the channel data stored in an encrypted fashion. If you don't go with a backup solution like Restic which has encryption built-in, take a look at tools like GPG for dealing with encryption. If you're a Windows user, the software Gpg4Win comes with a graphical app called Kleopatra that makes encrypting and decrypting files with a passphrase of your choosing straightforward.
