If using a Windows machine, you or your mentee may like chocolaty https://chocolatey.org/ as a software package manager. I use it for all of my Open Source Software (MikTeX, jabref, GIMP, greenshot, wxMaxima, Octave, R, Rstudio, inkscape, Libre Office, python, anaconda, thony, &c.) along with other software that expects frequent updates (I mostly use it with adobe products). They have an auto update function that can be enabled every time the computer is restarted. All the code needed for home use can be copy/paste into PowerShell.
