What they’re doing is forcing a URI link of ms-edge:https://domain.com for things like help documentation linked out of settings or news items in the shitty widget bar. Presumably they want dynamic web content linked from internal resources (especially documentation) to display correctly if the user decides to install some awful browser or their browser is hijacked or breaks. This might not be a great move for user choice but it’s being irresponsibly reported with clickbait titles like “Microsoft make it impossible to use third party browser”. Right now this is still in an insider build, so by all means install the build and send some feedback. Personally I don’t have a problem with the current change, especially has someone who manages thousands of devices in a multi browser environment. But it’s very very close to being a step too far. It all depends on where the ms-edge protocol starts to pop up. If I suddenly can’t open links from the mail app or Outlook outside of edge because it starts to transform http links into ms-edge:http links, we’ve got a giant problem. But they’ll never do they.
