Have a look though some blogs like Motionographer, Wine After Coffee, Art of the Title, where they showcase really great work and learn to analyse them critically, or sites like Vimeo and Behance where designers showcase their work. You need to be able to say why a piece is good and understand what skills and knowledge go into it. But also look beyond video and animation, into graphic design in particular but also art, fashion, web design, UX/UI, data visualisation...understand the context of the work itself, but also the wider context of motion design in general. This is the main advantage that someone with a college education will have over you, because they've spent years learning about design, criticising work and having their own work critiqued.
