Heroku equivalent/alternative to editing local hosts file?

So basically, I need to figure out the equivalent of pointing a CNAME for "example.com" to my Heroku app URL, on my local machine only. (For my purposes, I need to use "example.com" and use a reverse proxy—assume I can't change the request URL in my application source code and need to solve everything through routing).
