I'm setting up a new machine. Is there something like ansible for automatically installing things on a personal bare metal server?

NixOS GNU Guix

There's the nixos project which mostly aims to have the ability of centralizing a lot of that state management into a couple of configuration files, but it's a quite a bit of overhead to learn. (guix is also worth a mention as they're loosely a "derivative" using nix's core components, but they are very much their own project.).
