It's what happened to reddit, having the open source code for reddit didn't really help once they closed it. You could still replace the URL with a proprietary codebase or rewrite some of the code before re-licensing so it's not bullet proof. The best defense I can think off is having it be hosted by some volunteer led non profit (something like feneas ) so it won't get sold off.
