Software Alternatives & Reviews

Is Linux user friendly? I'm not a computer nerd or anything and I just wanna play games on my relatively cheap computer, and some people have suggested switching over to Linux, but honestly it sounds way too complicated for me. Is it like, you know, relatively easy to install and use?

I don't have experience with Pop!OS, but I can really recommend you Linux Mint: https://linuxmint.com/ Especially if you come from Windows. It's based on Ubuntu but with a stronger desktop focus. You will feel at home quickly, especially if you install the Cinnamon desktop version. There are plenty of YT how to install and review videos. You can watch a few of them to get an idea.

  3. AlternativeTo lets you find apps and software for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android, Android Tablets, Web Apps, Online, Windows Tablets and more by recommending alternatives to apps you already know.
You can even use these distros without installing them natively, which is a huge plus as you can see if they work for you or not. See if the apps you use are natively supported and if not, look for alternatives(alternativeto.net is a great site for finding them, just sort by Linux or open source and you're good to go). Steam is natively supported, and the company behind them, Valve, has made a great piece of software called Proton which allows for non native games to run on Linux(Do note that any game with DRM or anticheat software won't run, so that's a negative). As for other games, WINE and its graphical frontends like PlayOnLinux and Lutris will help a lot.
