The old widget that was driving the new tab page must be removed because it's unmaintained code, not updated for Proton, nor we have the resources to spend on that. The urlbar can replicate 1:1 the functionality, but with additional benefits, for example a non-technical user that types "reddit.com" would actually visit it directly instead of searching it and then having to click on the search result. And there's some typos fixing for urls too, so they can also type "reddit.ocm" or "reddit..com".
