A lot of countries actually do it that way, but tax prep companies like Intuit (TurboTax) & H&R Block have lobbied congress hard to keep things the way they are now so that they’re still needed. I’d suggest contacting your representatives through apps like 5 Calls or (if you have phone anxiety like me) text/email through ResistBot (texting “Resist” to 50409 or @ResistBot on Telegram) to encourage them to stand up to these companies & to advocate for a better taxing system.
