The distinction between AI and M/L is fuzzy. Traditional AI used a number of techniques to model neural architectures and pathways based on various theories. M/L is more or less kind of brute force stupidity that strengthens connections between decision paths based on learning millions (or trillions, etc...) of examples. This is basically IBM Watson (successor-ish to Deep Blue). With M/L, something like Deep Blue could likely be set up and trained by scientists in a fraction of the time it took to design and code deep blue, using data from chess.com or other games to train it from the millions of games played, but possibly even include other metadata like personal info from social media and cookies, to model the players as well to anticipate more likely strategies before the first move is played. The computer would seem "smart", but is actually kinda dumb.
