  1. Check if your account has been compromised in a data breach
For those asking how this happens, it is called dataleaking and its when your username and password gets leaked through a databreach and crackers can find 1000s of these accounts online and test them in a checker for different sites, so in this guy's case he probably signed up for something else with the same password and when his credentials got leaked, people will check if they work for different sites..... You can check if you have had a databreach on your account at haveibeenpwned.com I recommend using a service such as BitWarden or LastPass to have an individual password for each account.

  2. Bitwarden is a free and open source password management solution for individuals, teams, and business organizations.
    Pricing:
    • Open Source
    • Freemium
    • $10.0 / Annually (Premium)
If you're not doing this already, make sure to use a password manager like Bitwarden. Then you can have just one secure password that you know, and a different secure password for every website you use.

  3. 3
E-Mail-forwarding from a freely selectable to another E-Mail-address.
If you don't want to set it up yourself, e4ward is built to do what u/irieken is describing. You can generate random aliases with a note for each address. I've caught a bunch of people giving my email to someone.

  4. Firefox Monitor arms you with tools to keep your personal information safe.
And you can check whether you appear in a databreach on https://monitor.firefox.com or on havibeenpwned.
