How legit is the compiler and how likely can a compiler be malware and how hard it is to be detected?

I'd second MSYS2. Briefly, it has two "modes": mingw (GCC, except built for windows) and msys (a POSIX-compatibility shim and associated tools), both of which have their packages managed by pacman.
