So... what can I do to invest, outside of 401k?

Fundrise CrowdStreet
  1. The first low-cost private market investment advisor
Most 401k's have very limited investment choices - certain families of mutual funds, most being quite broad. That's fine for the slice of savings / investment that most folks are allocating to them. Investing in individual stocks can be interesting and if you have a diversified portfolio of 10 or so high quality stocks which may not be in your 401k's funds you won't have to fear one company's performance. Due to what you have available you can diversify, 401k's are after all linked to the stock market. Real estate has been a large wealth creation asset and also does well in inflationary times and there are many who think we are about to enter an inflationary period. There are some nifty ways to invest in property without buying one but like anything you have to be careful. Two platforms that are transparent and not difficult to understand are fundrise.com and crowdstreet.com , they are obviously more liquid in a time of need than selling an actual property.
