It really is hard to leave Gmail when all of your data has been conveniently stored therein. This is one of Google's retention strategies and it is indeed brilliant. That said, there's a vast number of self-hosted alternatives like Stalwart Mail (email) [1], Immich (images) [2], NextCloud (Google Docs) [3], etc. [1] https://stalwa.rt [2] https://immich.app [3] https://nextcloud.com/. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 months ago
Good open source self-hostable alternatives exist! https://nextcloud.com/ (no affiliation, just a longtime happy user) is great for file sharing and even collaborative online document editing. If you do not want to host your own instance, there are many great providers who will host one for you at a low cost. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
See Configuration and syntax changes and Special packages. The latter this time includes changes around NextCloud 23 and Tor Browser prior to 12.5, both of which should be upgraded beforehand. - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago
> Cloud storage for phones: http://nextcloud.com Thanks, that sums it up for me. I used OC/NC for years but in the last three I mostly abandoned it because the desktop app (for Windows, at least) is atrocious and Android one... isn't good either. But as on-demand document download with occasional upload it's fine. - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago

This is usually where I whisper "Nextcloud," depending greatly on the circumstances. But it's worth knowing that it's an option. Source: 11 months ago
Google offers a lot of services, like Google Drive, Maps, Notes, Google docs etc. You can do all that in your own environment without letting Google harvest your data. There is a piece of software called Nextcloud. If you install this on your server, you can use your machine's harddrive as cloud storage, with the ability to share links, create and collaborate documents, make notes and mindmaps, it even has a... I am not interested in complex cloud hosting systems like https://www.seafile.com/en/home/, https://nextcloud.com/, https://owncloud.com/. I run some cloud software (forgot the name) in the past and it was very inefficient at synchronizing, Seafile was great with synchronization, but recovery was painful. Source: 12 months ago
Newbie friendly would be https://nextcloud.com/ easy setup and don't need crazy hardware a old PC would work just fine. Source: 12 months ago
As mentioned, I do not use closed-source services either. So, I do not use services by big tech companies. People use gmail, google drive, google search, WhatsApp, Zoom, Netflix, Spotify, Microsoft Office, photoshop etc. All these services collect and sell your data. I use ProtonMail, Nextcloud, Matrix, Jitsi, Jellyfin, LibreOffice, GIMP etc. Most of these sre self-hosted, that is, they are hosted on my home... Source: 12 months ago
My plan is to make a home-server by putting a Google Coral M.2 Accelerator in an m92p tiny thinkstation (after I've given it a Xeon E3-1265L V2 and 32gb of DDR3 RAM ofc, annnd once I connect the M.2(E) to the mini-PCIe socket and get past the BIOS whitelisting  might take me a year to get around to, but heck when I do, I'll be the queen of 2015!). The only other things I want to serve are a 3-user... Source: 12 months ago

As you are planning for degoogle, I would suggest Nextcloud + Les Pas for similar map timeline function. There is a short footage on Les Pas's link demonstrates it. Plus, Nextcloud will bring you contact, calendar sync and advanced group collaboration too. Source: about 1 year ago
While considering alternatives, I thought about DokuWiki, which looks like an unlikely solution, and Nextcloud, which I've already used in the past. Both seem a good option in their own right, though I favor Nextcloud because it's a more direct approach. However, I'm inclined towards a solution that's leaner and less bloated. Nevertheless, if any of those is the one that is most likely to solve my dilemma, I'm... Source: about 1 year ago
We use Amazon S3 storage and https://nextcloud.com/ for the interface. It’s a good setup especially for the price, scales to fit your needs and is very customizable but does require some expertise to set up and manage. Source: about 1 year ago
