Athens [1] is an even better free and open source alternative, started by someone who was rejected [2] for a Clojure job at Roam! Athens was even accepted to YC [3]. [1] https://github.com/athensresearch/athens. - Source: Hacker News / almost 3 years ago

  • Why Young Developers Donโ€™t Get Knowledge Graphs
I started using https://github.com/athensresearch/athens I quickly fill with lot of information, I miss code feauteres like markdown github fencing ```, but so far is great, searh is fast, adding new data is good, refereces links and back links really adds to the information, and the daily page is useful. I just would like to have more features about code. - Source: Hacker News / almost 3 years ago
  • Designing Synced Blocks
Check out Athens [1]. It's closer to Roam than Notion, but it's free and open source, and they seem to be headed in the right direction: [1] https://github.com/athensresearch/athens. - Source: Hacker News / almost 3 years ago
  • Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile โ€“ Plain-text knowledge base on the go
After searching around (and trying Roam, Obsidian, a bit of Tiddlywiki, etc) I ended up sticking with Athens [0][1]. It's essentially an open-source version of Roam, and it's YC funded. I've found it to already be mature enough to be a good replacement for Roam. • In your opinion, will the events down in Texas, involving voter rights, cause the House and Senate to pass the HR1 bill, in regards to voter rights?
I've been taking some notes on these topics using tools like roamresearch and I would encourage others to do the same. https://roamresearch.com/ there's also athensresearch if you don't want to spend money. https://github.com/athensresearch/athens both of these encourage taking notes that link things based on relatedness, and I think that's a very powerful tool for figuring out how to take action politically. • Cognicull: Knowledge base for mathematics, natural science and engineering
I use my own not-yet-ready-for-release app called Noteworthy [1], but here is a list of some of the roamlikes I find most inspiring: > Athens Research -- free and open source roam competitor made by someone who failed an interview for a job at roam :) -- https://github.com/athensresearch/athens > Obsidian -- free but non-open wikilink system based on Markdown files -- https://obsidian.md/ > Foam -- Markdown-based... - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
  • Open Source Notion?
TIL Roam has an open-source alternative called Athens but Notion doesnโ€™t have one. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Is it just me that is overwhelmed by the dozens of subscription based D&D/RPG tools?
Foam saved my life in that regard. It lets me just write something down, insert links where it feels like there should be links, and it just organizes itself into a helpful graph. See also, Obsidian, Athens for other takes on the same idea. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Baserow.io โ€“ Self-hosted Airtable alternative
There's an interesting trend of open source clones of popular products. Most recent one that comes to mind is Athens [0] which is an open source clone of Roam Research. The business model is always that people who really want it for free can self host, and people who don't want to deal with the hassle will pay for hosting. Seems like a reasonable strategy to me.
