Peppermint has worked really well on just about everything I've thrown it on, uses XFCE desktop (generally great for older hardware), and doesn't come with a bunch of stuff preinstalled that you'll not likely use.   I use MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid-2014) with Manjaro as OS using i3 as a window manager. It isn't perfect, but I'm thrilled with it.
