Not all games support it, and best bet is online-fix for the games that support it or LogMeIn Hamachi to emulate a LAN via VPN for the games that support that functionality. There isn't something that is a 100% safe, I have used it now for over 2 years to play with my friends without any hiccups or anything suspicious.
