Graphic designer here. I do find it hard at times, but one of the first things I do is determine a palette. color.adobe.com is wonderful in that regard. I also have a few bookmarked sites for hex codes for colors, so once I get a starting point, I can choose complimentary/contrasting colors and keep faith in color theory that things will work well together.
